Q: How to Choose the right size flange for breast pump?
A: To determine the best flange size for you, you'll need to measure your nipple. Take a tape measure or ruler and measure the diameter, or width across, of your nipple in millimeters. Do not include measurements for your areola, the larger part around your nipple. Select your flange size based on your measurement

Q: What is the default size of the flange that already comes with an Ameda® breast pump?

A: All Ameda® Breast Pumps and HygieniKit® Milk Collection Systems come with a 25.0mm flange standard that works well for most mothers. However in some cases, the flange size does need to be adjusted and this is where the Ameda® CustomFit Flexishield Areola Stimulator can help. This particular model is the XS (Extra Small) version and assists moms where the standard default size is a bit too big. Please refer to the Ameda® breast flange sizing chart in order to ensure the best possible experience and to confirm the correct size. 

Q: What happens if breast flanges are too big during pumping?

A: Firstly, this can result in a very painful, unpleasant experience as your breast areola will be pulled into your pump's breast flange tunnel, which will cause discomfort. Due to this, it's highly likely that your areola won't receive enough stimulation which in turn could cause low milk supply during breast pumping.

Q: Can the wrong flange size affect milk output?

A: Most definitely.  A breast flange that fits too tightly will cause the breast to be constricted in ways that can lead to it becoming clogged up or even resulting in blocked milk ducts. A flange that sits too loosely may end up hurting the areola due to the suction motion of the pump and end up causing minimal milk production.
